What is it?

Gaining insight into your condition

Type 1 diabetes, also known as type 1 diabetes mellitus, is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system targets and destroys the beta cells in the, preventing insulin production. Insulin is crucial for transferring glucose from the bloodstream cells for energy. It's important to note that Type 1 diabetes is distinct from Type 2 diabetes, which is often related to lifestyle factors.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes can develop slowly over months or years, and symptoms can seem to appear very quickly.

The most common symptoms of early-stage type 1 diabetes are:

  • Extreme thirst

  • Extreme urination

  • Extreme hunger

  • Unintended weight loss

  • Fatigue

  • Weakness

  • Blurred vision

  • Mood swings

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Leg cramps

  • Slow healing wounds

  • Itching, tingling hands or feet

  • Nausea, vomiting

Causes of Psoriasis

The precise cause of most diabetes types remains unknown, but in all cases, accumulates in the bloodstream due to insufficient insulin production by the pancreas. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes may arise from a mix of genetic and environmental factors, though the specific factors are not yet clear.

Risk factors

Risk factors differ based on the diabetes type. Family history can influence all types, while environmental factors and geographical location may contribute to the risk of type 1 diabetes.

Family members of individuals with type 1 diabetes may undergo testing for diabetes-related immune system cells (autoantibodies). Presence of these autoantibodies indicates a higher risk for developing type 1 diabetes, although not everyone with them will develop the condition.

Race or ethnicity can also increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Certain groups, including Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian individuals, are at a greater risk, though the reasons remain unclear.

Additionally, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes are more prevalent among individuals who are overweight or obese.
